Stem cell treatment for Richard Wiegand, a patient with progressive supranuclear palsy

Name: Richard Wiegand
Age: 65
Gender: Male
Country: USA
Diagnosis: Progressive Supranuclear Palsy
Treatment: Injections of neural stem cells, self stem cell activation and proliferation therapy, rehabilitation therapy, and TCM (traditional Chinese medicine).
Background
Richard was diagnosed with progressive supranuclear palsy-PSP several years ago. PSP, a rare but rapidly progressing degenerative disease, has left Richard in a wheelchair. He was unable to take care of himself independently. Due to unstable balance caused by PSP, Richard experienced frequent falls at the beginning. As his condition got worse, Richard stopped walking altogether. Richard’s speech was affected as he was not able to talk quickly and fluently. PSP also made Richard be sensitive to light, making him dependent on sunglasses, even when indoors.
Richard and his family had tried everything before deciding to come to Beijing Tiantan Puhua International Hospital in China for stem cell treatment. Unfortunately, none of the treatments available for PSP outside of China was able to help him get better, or slow down the decline of his condition. In order to search for a better quality of life, Richard and his family decided to come to China.
Medical condition pre-stem cell treatment
Prior to stem cell treatment, Richard was not able to walk independently because of problems with his balance, which required to be supported on both sides when he attempted to walk. Most of the time, Richard was confined to a wheelchair. Richard often felt dizzy, and constant care was required for this.
Richard also suffered from swallowing difficulty because of PSP, sometimes he would choke while eating. Together with a decline of his appetite, Richard lost weight after he got this disease. He was thinner than before. He was unable to eat or drink by himself. Richards speech was also effected before treatment at Puhua hospital. He could not speak quickly, fluently, and clearly, which made it difficult for people outside his nearest circle of family and friends to understand him. The quality of Richard’s life was poor.
Treatment
Four injections of neural stem cells, self stem cell activation and proliferation therapy, rehabilitation therapy, and TCM (traditional Chinese medicine).
Medical condition post-stem cell treatment
After his arrival at our hospital, some individual treatment protocols for Richard were applied. Also, Richard and his family have tried their best to cooperate well with the treatments. With efforts of all, significant improvements happened. Richard feels much better in general after the stem cell treatment. Richard’s dizziness has stopped after the first stem cell implantation. Now, Richard is able to walk steadily and quickly by himself, which is impossible for him for over a year. Richard’s strength has improved, and he feels more energetic than before.
Richard’s sensitivity to light has improved. He is not so sensitive to light now, as he is able to walk without sunglasses, even while going outside, although he still wears the glasses sometimes. Richard’s eyes do not tear as much as before. More eye blinking movements is noted. Prior to his coming to China, it was noted that he seldom blinked.
Richard’s speech also improved a lot. Now, Richard is able to speak more quickly, more fluently, and more clearly. It is more easily for others to understand him now. Richard talks to others more actively. Sometimes he likes joking with his family.
Stem cell treatment also helps Richard have less problem with his eating. Richard can now eat and drink by himself. It is also easier for him to turn his head and change his body position.
Richard’s accommodating family members have recorded improvements of Richard in our hospital, and they hope that the physiotherapy routine Richard learned from our hospital will help him to gain even more improvements upon returning home. The whole family has made great friends in the hospital, and has promised to keep in touch to update us on Richard’s improvements.
