Background

Mr. Abdul Azim, a 19 year old male patient from India, was admitted into Beijing Tiantan Puhua International Hospital on 2nd March 2010, due to “postnatal speech and growth retardation and limited mobility in all extremities for 19 Years”.

Abdul Azim was born prematurely, weighing 1600g. His delivery became complicated and during the birth Abdul Azim did not get enough oxygen, which resulted in cerebral palsy.

Medical condition pre stem cell treatment

Abdul Azim suffered from spastic quadriplegia. Due to problems in motor ability, he is confined to a wheelchair and not able to stand or walk by himself. With help however, he was able to move around somewhat. Abdul Azim's balance while seated was very poor, he was not able to support his torso and needed constant support while sitting. While standing upright, his right foot could not reach the ground. His hand coordination was poor, especially at his wrists and he had problems rotating them. Abdul Azim’s speech was also very unclear, he spoke very slowly and other people would have difficulties understanding what he was saying.

Medical condition post stem cell treatment

While in the Hospital, Abdul Azim and his father worked very hard with the rehabilitation team in order to achieve every possible improvement following the stem cell transplantations. After the treatment, his muscle tone has decreased in all limbs, which made his limbs more flexible. Abdul Azim’s muscle strength in upper limbs  increased, and he can now lift his upper hands up to the level of his head.

Abdul Azim’s grip is firmer now. His hand coordination has improved, especially the wrist rotation. He is now able to bend his legs and walk with assistance. His walking is now more steady and the pace has improved. His torso and knee joints are straighter than before. Unlike the condition before the treatment, his feet are now able to touch the ground while standing. For the first time, without having the assistance of his caregiver, Abdul Azim is able to switch from lying down to sitting up by himself.

Abdul Azim is returning home with the hope of seeing further improvements with the help of a complete physiotherapy plan and regime that Beijing Tiantan Puhua International Hospital has provided for him.
