Stem cell therapy for intracranial lymphoma

Name: Ms. Huang
Gender: Female
Country: Hong Kong
Age: 73
Diagnosis: Multiple intercranal lymphomas
Treatment method: Combination stem cell therapy

Background

Ms. Huang is a 73 year old patient from Hong Kong, who experienced multiple intracranial lymphomas. She was admitted into the stem cell center of Beijing Tiantan Puhua Hospital for treatment in July 2009.

In July 2009, Ms Huang’s left arm became weak without obvious control. Her walk was unsteady, accompanied with dizziness, headache, nausea, and with occasional vomiting. After 5 days, one morning, she suffered an accidental fall. She was later admitted into a local Hospital. The PET/CT scan revealed that she in fact had an intracranial occupying lesion, SUV=27.1, with apparent edema surrounding the tumor. The cranial MRI showed multiple intracranial occupying lesions, which were confirmed to be diagnosed as Malignant Lymphomas. Her symptoms improved somewhat after 5 days of radiation therapy. She was semi-conscious but her right limbs were not flexible.

Medical condition pre stem cell treatment

Her mood and attitude was weak and listless. She experienced a strong sense of physical weakness and dizziness. She had difficulty walking and exhibited poor balance. Consequently, when she did walk she would do so with the aid of a wall. Her appetite was suppressed, and she was thirsty with a frequent desire to drink. Her bowel and bladder function were disturbed, demonstrating frequent urination symptom (urinating on average 40 minutes period) and a poor stool. She was prescribed the drug Tong Bianling to assist in the discharge of her stool. Her sleep was disturbed enough for the need for sleep medications: benzodiazepines were taken in order to assist sleep. A cranial MRI revealed multiple intracranial occupying lesions.

Treatment

Combined therapies based on stem cell treatment.

Medical condition post stem cell treatment

After the treatments, her previous dizziness, headache, nausea and vomiting had disappeared completely. Her consciousness was clear. She could walk more quickly and steadily than previously. Also, she could walk well without aid or assistance, and she was no longer walking with the aid of the wall. Her bowel and bladder function were improved, as the frequent urination symptom disappeared (urinating on average 2 - 3 hours/time intervals) and the stool became normal (1- 2 times /day). Her sleep quality improved and the need for the use of benzodiazepines was removed. She experienced a more positive mood and improved mental state.

In September 2009, she underwent a re-examination of her condition. Compared with the former cranial MRI Scan taken in July 2009, the lesions located in the right temporal lobe, frontal lobe, the right lateral ventricle, and the right lateral ventricle side had all obviously decreased. The lesions in the right temporal lobe, frontal lobe had almost disappeared. The lesion adjacent to the posterior horn of the right lateral ventricle lessened significantly. An enhanced scan showed the ventricle pressure and the intracranial edema were apparently relieved in comparison with the previous scans. She underwent six more rounds of integrated therapy to further enhance the positive effects of the stem cell therapy.

Follow up

On February 2nd 2010, she received a review. The PET/CT scan showed that all the intracranial lesions had disappeared. Only in the lateral ventricle could see a calcification, SUV=3, the index had apparently decreased. Her condition is quite stable. She feels excellent, and has found her confidence in life again. Her relatives are very happy, and excited to see what has happened with her health renewal.

Here is a letter her son wrote to us:

"Dear Dr. Zhang,

I am so happy to hear that the lesion in my mother’s brain almost disappeared. I am so glad that I do not know what to say.

The government hospital in Hong Kong had given up treating my mother and I was grasping the last straw as a drowning man, to bring her to Beijing Tiantan Puhua Hospital in China for treatment. I couldn't have hoped for this result. I have never thought about that the cancer may almost disappear. You all have done an excellent job for us. It is a miracle. Here I just want to express my gratitude for you and the whole staff of Beijing Tiantan Puhua Hospital. I sincerely hope you will help more and more cancer patients in the future."
